Some five years ago I got the chance to meet two guys and a lady who made my life look weird and wild for a few seconds. I 've sort of lost the perspective and I no longer remember the whole experience to the full, just pieces of it, anecdotes, conversations, images, and a genuine feeling that this was not my thing. It was my first time getting involved in the organizing of a gig, and you bet I don't feel like doing it again. I will, because I'm a man and I'm stupid.
The point is that meeting those persons was one great experience that I won't ever forget. How can you forget that you met someone like Jonny Barber who seems like if he also fell into the gallic magic potion or two of the most wildly-looking-but-charming-being people I've ever met: a couple who responded back then to the name of The Rhythm Razors but that are now better known as The Living Deads and they're coming to be distinguished as music felons who spend their tours kidnapping guitarists. I'm talking about Randee McKnight and Symphony Tidwell. They two keep moving, driving their RV from town to town and giving some of the most powerful gigs you could ever see. Randee, who played before for the Hillbilly Hellcats, is all guts and skill at the drums and Symphony makes standup bass even bigger and rarer when she plays it with such passion and nerve. You won't regret it if you make it to one of their gigs.
I don't know the story but I know that they parted ways. Jonny Barber stayed in Denver and Randee and Symphony speeded up. I keep track of them as if they were still together. And I got good news just a few days ago, 'cause someone sent me this video in which I could confirm that Jonny Barber had revived The Rhythm Razors. And he has done it with a good bunch of veteran and gifted musicians such as R&B Hall of Fame member J.M. Van Eaton. Mike Blair is also there. And Matt Ross-Spang who, that's what I read, is the one responsible for having returned the Sun Studios to their previous glory, and it is precisely there, in the historic and magical Sun Studios where Jonny Barber has gathered all these guys just to play a song called "Delilah's Barber Shop" that he himself wrote and sings.
And I just wanted to share the video with you and celebrate that, even if they decided to choose divergent paths, these three musicians that I once left at a local cafeteria in my native town waiting for me while I was gone to try to buy a new battery for my laptop (whenever I pass by that same cafeteria I can always remember the look of fear and surprise on the waitress), these three guys that burned down every little stage that they climbed up, these three guys who gave me a lesson about the meaning of loving music and the life that comes with it, let's celebrate, I was saying, that these three guys still keep doing the same stuff: soundtracking the long struggling ahead. And that I wanted to celebrate. No better way to do it that by watching some videos: the one I mentioned, a song by Jonny Barber and The Rhythym Razors, another one by The Living Deads and an old video in which we can see them three together in the good old days.
Hace unos cinco años tuve la oportunidad de conocer a tres personas que
consiguieron que mi vida, al menos durante unos breves segundos,
pareciera salvaje y espontánea. He perdido toda la perspectiva y ya no
retengo una memoria completa de aquella experiencia. Me quedan pequeñas
anécdotas, el recuerdo de conversaciones, imágenes, pero, sobre todo,
una sensación muy real de que todo aquello no iba conmigo. Fue la
primera vez en mi vida en la que me involucraba en la promoción de un
concierto, y puedes apostar que no me quedaron ganas de repetirlo. Lo
volveré a hacer, por supuesto, porque soy humano y los humanos somos
mayormente estúpidos.
Lo que quería decir es que conocer a aquellos tíos fue una de esas experiencias que no olvidas nunca. ¿Cómo vas a olvidar que un día conociste a Jonny Barber, alguien que probablemente también se cayera al nacer en una marmita mágica como la de los galos o a dos de las personas con la apariencia más desafiante y el corazón más grande que has llegado a conocer, una pareja que, por entonces, respondía al nombre de The Rhythm Razors pero a los que ahora se les conoce como The Living Deads y empiezan a ser reconocidos como unos delincuentes musicales que dedican sus giras a secuestrar guitarristas? Hablo de Randee McKnight y Symphony Tidwell. Los dos siguen dedicándose a conducir su autocaravana de ciudad en ciudad mientras regalan alguno de los directos más poderosos que podrás ver jamás. Randee, que ya había tocado la batería para los Hillbilly Hellcats, es todo entrañas y talento a las baquetas y Symphony consigue, gracias a la pasión y nervio con la que toca el contrabajo, que este instrumento parecezca aún más grande y suene aún más especial. No te arrepentirás si decides asistir a uno de sus conciertos.
No conozco los detalles pero sé que los tres decidieron separarse. Jonny Barber se quedó en Denver cuando Randee y Symphony arrancaban su caravana. Les he seguido el rastro por separado pero como si aún formaran parte del mismo grupo. Y acabo de recibir buenas noticias porque, hace solo unos días, alguien me envió un nuevo video en el que se puede disfrutar del regreso de los Rhythm Razors junto a Jonny Barber. Barber ha recuperado a la banda y, para ello, a falta de Randee y Symphony, se ha rodeado de un buen puñado de habilidosos músicos veteranos. Gente como el miembro del Museo de la Fama del Ryhthm and Blues, J.M. Van Eaton, de Mike Blair o de un Matt Ross-Spang que, el otro día leía, es el máximo responsable de que el histórico Sun Studio haya vuelto por sus fueros. Y es precisamente en ese lugar mágico donde Barber convoca a este nuevo elenco y graba una canción, "Delilah's Barber Shop" que él mismo ha escrito y canta.
Simplemente quería compartir ese vídeo con vosotros y, de paso, celebrar que, aún cuando estos músicos han decidido seguir caminos opuestos, los tres, esos tres extraviados norteamericanos a los que dejé un buen día esperándome en una cafetería de mi pueblo mientras yo intentaba comprar una nueva batería para mi portátil, una cafetería por la que suelo pasar a menudo y nunca consigo evitar que me asalte el recuerdo de la cara de susto que tenía la camarera cuando al volver de la tienda me los encontré allí metidos, intentando pedir una taza de café, esos tres músicos, como digo, han decidido seguir quemando todos los escenarios a los que se suben. Estas tres personas me enseñaron una lección muy útil sobre lo que significa amar la música y todas las consecuencias que conlleva esta pasión. Los tres han decidido seguir empeñándose, seguir intentando ponerle banda sonora a la lucha perenne que nos define. Y no se me ocurre mejor manera de celebrarlo que escuchando música. Por eso cuelgo tres vídeos, el primero corresponde a la susodicha canción que Jonny Barber grabó recientemente en Sun Studio, un vídeo oficial de The Living Deads y un último vídeo con una vieja canción que los tres tocaban juntos hace casi un lustro.
